BAPTISM

Baptism is the beginning of the journey of initiation into the Catholic faith community and continues with the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. By Baptism, we begin an entirely new life.  We become “a new creation” (2 Cor. 5:17).  We are freed from the power of sin, made one with Christ, and we are part of the Church in which the life of the risen Christ flows and acts. St. Paul in his letter to the Galatians says that we were baptised into union with Christ, and so have taken upon ourselves the qualities of Christ himself (cf. Gal 3:27ff). Through Baptism, we become the children of God and thereforeare given a share in the divine life.

Symbols of Baptism include:  water, oil, white garment and Baptismal candle.

Baptism Preparation
Upon completion and submission of the Baptism Application Form, the Parish secretary will contact you to confirm the date and time of the Baptism. The parents and chosen godparents of the child are asked to attend a Baptism Preparation session. These are held on the first Monday of each month at 7pm in the St Martin's Parish Hall. During the preparation, the meaning of Baptism, the rituals and symbols used are discussed. The roles and responsibilities of parents and godparents are explained and time is provided for parents and godparents to ask questions.

At least two members of the Baptism team always attend the actual celebration of the Sacrament to welcome the families, godparents and visitors. We believe that it is important to make them feel comfortable and welcome and that they feel supported.
